Landscaped Villa Pool

The garden of a two-storey villa on a generous plot: a pool with one rounded end, a light stone terrace, a lawn broken up by young trees, and the vehicle approach, all built together.

The shape of a pool is a decision

One end of the pool was rounded. That is as much about use as about looks: the round end was set aside as the shallow zone and given the steps and a seating ledge, while the rectangular part stayed as swimming length. One pool therefore serves two uses, and the shallow zone removes the need for a separate children's pool.

Setting the falls on a large terrace

The stone terrace around the pool was left generous for loungers and circulation. On hard landscaping of this size a single fall is not enough; the terrace was divided into zones that send water away from the pool and into gullies at two separate points. Rainwater running back into the pool only adds load to the filtration for nothing.

Planting and vehicle layout

• The lawn is broken up by young trees and potted palms, planted with room to grow
• Irrigation runs beneath the planted islands and never cuts across the hard landscaping
• The vehicle approach is separated from the garden; visitor cars do not reach the lawn or terrace
• The boundary hedge works as both a screen and a wind break

Outcome
