Gebze Villa Pool

The garden works for a three-storey villa on a steep slope in Gebze: a pool terrace in light-coloured stone on the level won from stepped retaining walls, and a glazed enclosed terrace off the garden floor.

Winning a level out of a slope

The plot sits markedly below the road behind it. The level the pool needed was won not with a single tall wall but with retaining walls that step back one above the other. Stepping keeps both the wall height and the earth pressure behind it down; each step was given its own drainage pipe, and these were collected into a single outfall.

Pool and terrace

The pool sits directly in front of the garden floor. Its surround was laid in light-coloured stone: on this orientation a dark stone becomes too hot to stand on in midsummer. The strip between the pool edge and the enclosed terrace was falled so that water runs towards the garden, not towards the building.

The glazed terrace

The terrace in front of the garden floor was enclosed in glass, so that in the months when the pool is not in use the space still works as an extension of the garden. The bottom profile of the glazing sits above the terrace finish, so water does not collect in the channel when it rains.

Outcome

On a steep slope, garden work is usually twice as much earth and wall as what you end up seeing. Here the retaining steps and drainage were finished before the pool was excavated. See our spa, pool and wellness construction page or request a quotation for your own site.
