Beylikdüzü Villa Pool

On a plot in Beylikdüzü that falls away from the street towards the garden, a swimming pool set one level below the garden floor of a three-storey villa, with a natural stone terrace around it.

Holding the level first

The plot is not flat: the garden steps down from the level the building sits on. Because the pool went on that lower step, the first item of work was not the pool but the reinforced concrete retaining wall that holds the step. The wall was cast and drained behind before pool excavation began; done the other way round, water coming off the slope collects behind the pool shell.

The terrace surface

The pool surround and the steps were laid in natural stone. This surface has to do two things at once: grip when wet, and stay cool enough to walk on barefoot at midday. The textured stone does both, and the joints were set to a fall that carries water away towards the garden.

Relation to the garden floor

The covered terrace of the garden floor looks onto the pool; the level difference between them was resolved with wide steps, so terrace and pool read as one outdoor living space rather than two. The pool's filtration and balance tank were placed behind the retaining wall, out of sight from the garden.

Outcome

On a sloping plot the real work of a pool is not the excavation but holding the level and sending the water the right way. Retaining, drainage and waterproofing were treated here as parts of one job.
